I'm Off!

Kaléo ministry:
This week at youth we had a talent show. Hmmm what exhibitable talents do I have? Laffy Taffy jokes! I didn’t a little bit of joke telling as my “talent.” Katie and Ellie did a dance to Thriller, which was hilarious, but in an impressed way. Other acts included singing, dancing, juggling both balls and with a soccer ball. My personal favorite was a kid trying to slice a peeled banana in half with a deck of cards. He could only get the top off, and dig the cards into the banana about half way, so because he couldn’t quite pull it off, he had to eat it with me feeding it to him with my feet.

Church was the same ole same ole. No invites to go to eat, but Marissa, Katie and I did go for a stroll through the cemetery, which is across the street from the church. This will be our last youth group and church service for the next three weeks while we are at the Olympics.

Kaléo Life:

We had two note worthy events this past week, one: the 48 hour prayer session in prep for both Mexico and the Olympics, and two: theology class with Jim Paulson. The prayer room, I only got to be in once, but it was still very beneficial in prepping for the Olympics. It really helped us get focused on what is important and why we are doing these missions trips.

Our theology class was HILARIOUS. Jim would say some of the funniest things that I’ve ever heard a teacher or prof. ever utter. Our K7 blog has about all of them thanks to James’ hard work during class. On a more serious note, we got to delve into some pretty deep topics, and talk and wrestling with theology. Jim seems to be very open-minded about his position on everything. He was very humble in what we had to say, and even though he is about 50ish he seemed very open to change his mind on topics as his study and devotion developed. I have come to the realization that this class has just dumped a slew of ideas into my head and I am left to sort through them in the intervening months and years.

Please keep both the Olympics and Mexico in your prayers:
1. Energy, strength
2. Focus on what is important, God
3. That we will have many conversations talking about You, Lord
4. We will stay in prayer and reading of the Bible throughout our time in Mexico and Vancouver

Calm Before the Storm

Kaléo ministries
This week we were able we were back into our normal routine, except not really. We had youth here at qwanoes along with all the rest of the youth groups in the cowichan valley (except one church). Safe to say no one knew exactly what was going to happen, or how anything would turn out, but it turned out great. The game was fun, the singing was great, and our very own intern, Justin Lenny, was our speaker who did a fantastic job. Yes, it was a gong show, but one that worked.
Last week at church, an old lady that I was sitting next to, said she had a strong’s concordance that she didn’t want, and was willing to give away. This week she brought it and gave it to me, a very useful and nice gift. Don’t you just love old people? I think all three of us had a great time at church today. Katie was in the service and found it a great sermon, Ellie was with the pre-schoolers and found that enjoyable. I was with the 2nd-4th grader class, and that was a fun time with the kids. To top it off, we went to Bethel Tabernacle, to pick up the other Kaléo’s and followed through with an invite to Tim Horton’s from a very generous man from the church.
We had another Olympic meeting this week, which was very short, where we mainly talked about logistics and all that jazz. We also talked about excitements, worries, encouragements, basically just got all our thoughts out into the open concerning the Olympics. We prayed and talked about how this trip is going to be about intentionality. It is going to be much easier on this trip to not be intentional about sharing Jesus with others, and that is why this trip must be intentional.

Kaléo Life
This past week we had been engrossed in schoolwork. We had Jim’s class, Camp Ministry. We mainly were bogged down with our church committee paper, in which we have to write about a church from the standpoint of a missions committee. We also had, and well I guess still do have to read 210 pages of Christian doctrine. It’s all very interesting, and great to learn, but there’s a lot to read! But it’s still fun. I also went over to the Badke’s house about 3-4 times this week, once even when they weren’t there. Let us all thank them for their knowing and unknowing hospitality. Lastly we had our second weekly meeting with Capernwray at Macdonald’s. We’re trying to go back for another Sunday dinner, except with some more people.

Pray for:
1. Olympics, not only leading up to them, but while we are there
2. Ministries here in crofton and in the Cowichan valley
3. Concentration and sponge-like minds for Intro to Theology this week.
4. Guidance for this summer, and upcoming fall semester.

I think i'm gonna die...

Kaléo Ministry:

We were dropped off at McDonald's for dinner and then we headed to youth. After spending about an hour between McDonald's and Safeway it was time to head on up to youth. None of us really wanted to go to youth that night seeing as how we just came back from 5 days on the hill snowboarding and skiing. We were still in our winter gear and we smelled (at least I did I don’t know about Katie and Ellie). We got there and we were having a games night, which means Pictionary, “knights, horses and prince”, snack, elbow tag and then sardines. I was surprised at how much fun I had, it was a great night overall. I was assigned to lead the devotional half way through the night, which turned out pretty good I thought. It was a good night to get back into the swing of things at youth group

At church the lady that pretty much slammed us, came up and apologized, and I think we smoothed things over a bit with all the Sunday school and how the scheduling is going to work. Once again I know that pastor Darin is going to be great for LFBC, which Darin actually wants to change the name of the church. Just one example of how much he wants to change the church. Trent just told me this Baptist joke the other day

How many Baptists does it take to change a light bulb?
Change?!

Kaléo Life:

As you know we just got back from a week on Mt. Washington shredding the gnar. It was fantastic! I snowboarded the first two days and decided that downhill skiing seemed much more natural for me, and easier to do, so I switched for Thursday/Friday. That was the best decision of my life. I was able to do bigger hills, and go faster with more control (except for when I hit that old lady).
Wednesday the majority of the group went snowshoeing around the mountain, while an intelligent few of us, and Jenna went cross-country skiing. So me and justin went skiing together while the rest of them were in a lesson, and blah blah blah we wound up on the top of boomerang (black diamond hellish) and blah blah blah we had fun and went down the downhill trails. For more information contact me. I don't know how many times i uttered the words "i think i'm gonna die."

During one of the chapels at night on the mountain, we were charged with renaming everyone else in Kaléo. We went through, and I was named “Gentle Ben”. These names were not meant to describe us now, in the present, but were more to serve as a name to grow into and challenge us. The names do reflect some of who we are now, but I think everyone came out a little bit scratching their heads, I know I was. Talking to JL and Sarah Badke about my name it has clarified a few points, and doing a little bit of word study has helped me come to a consensus about what it means to be gentle. In these conversations, more words, that are related have entered. Meekness. Humility. Faithfulness. Lowliness. Let’s see how these words play out through Kaléo and beyond!

Pray for:
1. Our missions trips, both Olympics and Mexico
2. Focus on God through the school and all the activities
3. Focus on school work
4. Let us all remember Haiti

meh

Kaléo Ministry
An interesting event transpired after church to say the least. But first I’ll fill in the rest of youth and the service. Youth was canceled this week, and we weren’t able to go last week because of missions fest, or the week before, because we were still coming back home. And we won’t be able to go next week because of the Mt. Washington trip. At the start of January 2010 LFBC has a new pastor, Darin I forgot-his-last-name. He is good for the church, a young energetic and creative pastor. He should be able to shake up LFBC and bring in some younger people and create some new ministries while he is head pastor.

But after the service today , which we stayed for since it was our first time back, the coordinator of the Sunday school came up to us, and asked an innocent and logical question enough. “Were you guys supposed to be helping in Sunday school this week?” None of us knew since we gave her the schedule and forgot when we scheduled what. Next thing we know she goes off about how we were unprepared and how we should hav done this and that. She then responds “One, I must apologize I should have communicated better” or something like that and then she said “Two, I thought you were all adults, but I guess not, I guess I have to keep better tabs on you guys.” Wow. I know we’re in BC and 19 is an adult, and two of us were only 18, but really? It's our first week back, and we don’t have the schedule. Safe to say, we all found it quite, shall we say comical, well after church. I’m sure if you read Ellie’s or Katie’s blog it will be a much more theatrical version.

Kaléo Life

Well this week was pretty chill, maybe not as much as Minnesota, but you know with all that snow there and the wind chill. We had our exam for theology of mission, which went pretty good, feeling confident about the result, but I guess I just have to wait about two months. We then started the first two days of Jim’s class, Camp Ministry. I’m a bit hesitant to say anything about the class because the person that reads this sits two feet from the teacher.

My dilemma has been, solved, at roughly 4:30 on wed. the 13th I shaved my beard. Mixed reactions as expected, but I’m still not sure if it was the right decision. Only time will tell, and if I give it enough time, the beard will be back, so let’s just wait and see. That’s about it for this week.

Off to Mt. Washington for some snowboarding, skiing (cross country of course), tubing and hot tubbin’!

EE TAOW! EE TAOW!

Ministry at Kaléo:

Over Christmas break turned out to be restful, relaxing and a good break from Kaléo, to appreciate it all the more when I came back. At home in the past, I have come back from missions trips, church, and camp only to drift and do nothing about the change in my life. This time though I was able to for the most part, not drift and was able to share with some old friends about what I was doing here and studying.
Coming back from missions fest, which is on the mainland, we had to take the ferry. On the ferry back over the spealers, we heard “if there is a doctor aboard, please come to the chief steward” this was 40 minutes into the ride, and then five minutes later we are heading back to horse show bay, where we had just come from. Apparently a man onboard had a heart attack. We had to turn around, but I think that within a few minutes of the announcement, most of Kaléo had prayed for that man and the passengers.

Today we had another Olympic meeting in preparation for our missions trip to the Olympics. We discussed what we want to pray for in the ensuing month for preparation. We discussed questions of how are we different than other volunteers, what do we offer that others don’t and how is this a missions trip and why the Olympics? There are many answers to all of these question, that I will probably answer in the upcoming weeks to our trip. It was a good meeting to really get us thinking and praying about what we are going to be doing, and to let god open up doors. Because the more we talk about it, the more excited I am about it, but I have to check my motives. Am I excited because I am going as Christ’s ambassador, or am I excited because I’m going to the Olympics? It is a question that has been on the forefront of my mind lately, and one that I intend to keep there.

Pray for: our next class with JimBad-camp ministry, the Olympic trip-focus, energy, boldness, that God would start preparing fellow volunteers, and spectators and our hearts. Pray also for our snowboard trip to Mt. Washington, that all goes well, we can enjoy each others compant, but above all that we will be a beacon of light to a dark world.

Kaléo Life:

“Mirror mirror on the wall is this not the most ridiculous beard of all?” But what to do with such a ridiculous beard? And is it a good or bad ridiculous? These are the musings that have ben going through my mind this past week. To shave or not to shave, that is the question. Hair is my dilemma, I am torn between the two, I just don’t know what to do.

We had the class Theology of Mission this past week, learning all about what mission is, what the scriptures say about it, how we can carry it out, how the church can better understand what it is and how they can develop it better in their churches. It was a great class to take and participate in and learn from Tim’s (the prof) experience. I pray and hope that we can all put our learning into practice within our churches here and when we head off to Mexico and the Olympics.

Immediately following class left for Missions Fest, a free conference devoted to the subject of Missions. With speakers and seminars and worship it was a revitalizing time with God and a great time getting back into Kaléo and being with Kaléo again. During missions fest, I found that my previously made statement, or more truthfully thought of “I’m never going to be on a long term missions trip” I saw that become untrue. Not to say I’m going on a trip or particularly feel called, but the door is not closed.

By the way we had a cougar sighting during the night as Haley and Marissa were walking back from the gym. It prompted a research and YouTube movies on cougars. We found they have a vertical of like 14 ft and a horizontal of like 20-40 ft. sketchy on the numbers, but something ridiculous like that.

A week of Eating

Ministry:

On wed. Jimbad came into our class after a break and told us that Duncan needed help sandbagging, and almost immediately, he had 25 willing students to go and help sandbag. You could argue that we just wanted to get out of class, but obviously you have not met Kaléo Seven. Fifteen minutes we all piled into two vans off to sandbag. We arrived and felt a bit stupid because there was already a group there and we had no shovels or any idea what to do, eventually we found ourselves battling against a mound of sand that never seemed to diminish. If it did, out of the darkness would come a sand truck to dump sand and bury our hops of progress. One of the vans left early, but the other half of us stayed another hour or so and wound up being there for about threeish hours. Then treated to hot chocolate and timbits. It was a time to show what the church is really about (not the eating the serving). Hopefully we have more opportunities to show this through the rest of the year.

This week at youth group I experienced something I had never experienced, 5-pin bowling. It was a bit ridiculous. To be able to palm the bowling ball and chuck it down with an insane amount of spin at five pins is something only the Canadians could think up. Us leaders also had a meeting to talk about what to do next year, and the topic of more devotionals came up. Insofar they have been pretty scarce due to so many activities and just traveling around the town and stuff.

Kaléo life:

US Americans had thanksgiving this past week with some other internationals from England and Australia. It was great we had “Gary,” really good stuffing, corn, rolls, mashed yams, magic cookies and pumpkin pie. I between first dessert and second dessert we went to the Ladysmith Light up. The light up is when they turn on all the Christmas lights in the city and have a parade down 1st ave. we then proceeded back to Amanda’s house to have second dessert.

Quite a bit less interesting is class. We just finished up foundations of church ministry, and had the final exam today, I failed by the way. We now have to write a paper on women in leadership roles in the church.

Lastly Rivera, Ellie and I ventured across to Thetis Island to pay a visit to Capenwray. Their campus is like an English country side in the 17th century. They even keep pigs and chickens that they feed with leftovers and at the end of the year, they eat them. We got to hear about a similar bible college program, they had their pros and their cons and so does Kaléo, but not for one second would I choose Capenwray over Kaléo. They have more classes, but don’t get graded for it, it sounds weird, but it makes sense. Safe to say that we all had a jolly good time.

Busy week. pt.∞

Ministry
This week was our week of 24/7 prayer. This does not mean that everyone prayed for 24 hours a day for 7 days. We all signed up for a one-hour slot either by ourselves or with someone. For me the week started off feeling energetic and excited. The first hour felt way too short, and I could feel all of the pain and hurt from people, but I also felt an immense amount of love from all of the Kaléos and leaders. The next one was similar, but the third time I went in I felt absolutely drained and empty, I could not feel God’s love or presence in the room as I had before. The next night I experienced something I had never felt before, God had filled me with love, he had filled in where I felt empty. IT WAS AMAZING. The next time I went in the prayer room the first thing I did was rip up the note I had written about not feeling God and all that. I could go on about what I experienced and what happened to others and what some of them felt and experienced but that is their story, and we could be here a long time.

This week at church, we were invited over for lunch at Vince’s house. Vince has two daughters in the youth group and helps out himself, so we kinda know Vince. He had us over for ribs and beans, which was delicious. It was just sweet to have that fellowship in the church.

We were scheduled to have a “love Crofton” chapel where we went around Crofton and did things for people such as pick up trash, help rake, pray for them, who knows. That had to be postponed because our leader Kristie was sick. Pray that we will make a difference in the community and that we can exhibit God’s love for the town of Crofton.

We also had our first Olympic missions meeting. Preparing for our missions trip to the 2010 winter Olympics. Learning what we are going to be doing and how we should go about it, so that God can be exemplified. Again pray for the hearts of those we will be interacting with and working with. Pray for focus, not only while we are there, but also in preparation for this trip. If we are not preparing now and focused now, we won’t be when we arrive. That focus includes us not having our eyes on a sweet experience, but making a change for the Kingdom of God.

Kaléo Life:
This was a sweet, but ridiculous week for me. It started off by having a OT test, which for me was not that bad, a sentiment I can assure you not many other people felt. We also had to write an OT research paper by Friday night. On top of this we all had to read two books that most of us hadn’t even started, and write summaries and evaluations and the such about them both.

All was not work and no play, au contraire! Sunday night was chocolate fondue with fresh fruit! Fresh fruit! Strawberries, pineapple, honeydew melon, grapes, it was heavenly. Then a group of us went and made puppy chow the next night, quite delicious except for the fact that the others froze it after making it instead of eating it while the chocolate is hot.

Then the many-times postponed “UFC Kaléo” or dubbed by Jenna “man fight” finally took place. With pre-fight trash talking videos and everything. Most of the guys participated, but everyone watched. My fight was the scrappiest fight known to mankind, well that’s what you get when you put two 130 poundish guys into a wrestling match. I lost.

By far the most fun night of all was the unnecessary all-nighter. Rivera, Caroline, John and I stayed up all night for no reason. It was like 3:15 when I finished the first half of my hw, when about seven others came down into the lounge and just started talking. By 4ish all but us had left, and we decided to watch the sunset, and thatled to us staying up all night. We watched some comedians on youtube, made a fort, had some in depth talks, made hot chocolate and played hide-and-seek. That took us to about sunrise so we headed to the dock, and could see the sun highlighting some of the clouds. Half an hour later, it started to sprinkle and we couldn’t see any of the sun because of the clouds. So we went to the kitchen and chilled in the tent that is being taken down there until breakfast. Why, you might ask? Because we can.
